Railway Foundry in West Bengal — Loco Castings Private Limited, Andal

When procurement managers, wagon builders, and Indian Railways workshop officers search for a railway foundry in West Bengal, one name consistently delivers certified quality, proximity to the Eastern Railway zone

Located at BAPL Industrial Township, Andal, Paschim Bardhaman — at the centre of West Bengal’s most freight-intensive industrial corridor — LCPL is the state’s only fully integrated, RDSO-approved, ISO 9001:2015 certified, NABL-accredited railway foundry. The facility manufactures CASNUB and LWLH alloy steel cast bogies, bogie sub-components, and an expanding range of industrial castings for mining, crushing, and power sector applications.

West Bengal’s Strategic Position in India’s Railway Supply Chain

West Bengal is not incidentally important to Indian Railways. It is structurally essential. The Eastern Railway zone — headquartered in Kolkata — manages one of the highest freight density networks in the country. Coal from the Raniganj coalfield, iron ore from the eastern corridor, steel from Durgapur, cement from the Bengal belt — all of it moves on Eastern Railway tracks in wagons that ride on CASNUB and LWLH bogies.

The state also houses major Indian Railways infrastructure: the Ondal Railway Workshop, the Liluah Workshop, the Kanchrapara Workshop, and dozens of maintenance depots that require bogie components for scheduled Periodic Overhaul programmes. These workshops are the recurring demand centre for any railway foundry in West Bengal.

According to IBEF’s railway sector analysis, India’s eastern freight zone carries a disproportionate share of the country’s bulk commodity freight — making West Bengal a critical node in the national railway supply chain.

LCPL’s Location: Why Andal Is the Optimal Address

LCPL’s foundry at BAPL Industrial Township, Andal sits at coordinates that are strategically significant for the Eastern Railway supply chain:

  • 8 km from the Raniganj coalfield — India’s oldest and most productive coal mining district. The BOXN wagons that carry this coal ride on CASNUB bogies manufactured at LCPL.
  • 5 km from the Ondal Railway Workshop — one of the Eastern Railway’s major wagon repair facilities. LCPL supplies HS wedges, centre pivots, and strut castings to this workshop for POH programmes, with same-day delivery capability that no external foundry can match.
  • 30 km from Durgapur Steel Plant — logistics wagons and raw material carriers for SAIL’s Durgapur facility use CASNUB bogies maintained at local workshops.
  • 40 km from Asansol — the industrial and logistics hub of the Paschim Bardhaman belt with full rail and road connectivity.
  • On the Howrah–Delhi main railway line — Andal Junction provides direct rail freight connectivity for outward bogie and component deliveries.
  • NH-2 road access — same-day road delivery to Kolkata in 4 hours, Durgapur in 45 minutes, Asansol in 50 minutes.

Eastern Coalfields Limited operates over 100 mines within 60 km of Andal — generating continuous demand for CASNUB bogie maintenance components at local workshops.

LCPL’s Foundry Infrastructure in West Bengal

5-Tonne Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) with Argon Purging

The EAF is LCPL’s primary quality differentiator. Unlike induction furnaces — which cannot remove phosphorus from the melt — LCPL’s EAF enables oxidising slag practice that drives phosphorus routinely below 0.015%. Lower phosphorus means better Charpy impact toughness and longer fatigue life under cyclic loading — the performance characteristics that freight bogie castings must sustain for 20+ years in service.

Argon purging after tapping removes dissolved hydrogen and nitrogen from the melt, preventing gas porosity. Ladle refining provides final chemistry adjustment to the target RDSO-grade alloy composition. Every heat is spectrometry-verified before pouring.

No-Bake Chemically Bonded Sand Casting

Chemically bonded resin-sand moulds replace conventional green sand. The rigid No-Bake mould maintains dimensional stability through the pour — no moisture-related drift. Critical CASNUB and LWLH dimensions — journal pocket centres (2260 mm), pedestal opening widths, spring pocket geometry — are held consistently within RDSO drawing tolerances.

Heat Treatment — Normalising and Tempering

Electric heat treatment furnaces with logged time-temperature profiles for every batch. Transforms as-cast alloy steel microstructure into refined, uniform material with target mechanical properties. Heat treatment records are part of LCPL’s standard delivery documentation.

CNC Machining —  Plano Mill

Critical surfaces — journal pockets, bolster wear areas, CP bores — finish-machined on LCPL’s  CNC plano mill (10-metre table). Dimensions verified against RDSO drawing tolerances before release for despatch.

NABL Accredited In-House Testing Laboratory

Spectrometry, UTS testing, Charpy impact testing, hardness testing, and metallographic examination — all performed on-site. Results available same day. No outsourcing delays, no chain-of-custody gaps.

NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) accreditation means LCPL’s material certificates are accepted without question by procurement organisations, regulatory authorities, and OEM quality systems.

Three Certifications That Define LCPL as West Bengal’s Railway Foundry

LCPL Certification Stack — All Three Current
• RDSO Class A Approval — highest RDSO vendor classification for CASNUB and LWLH bogie components. Mandatory for Indian Railways supply.
• ISO 9001:2015 Certification — International Quality Management System. Independently audited annually.
• NABL Accredited Laboratory — national accreditation for in-house testing. Test certificates accepted by all procurement organisations.

RDSO Class A Approval is the Research Designs and Standards Organisation’s highest vendor classification. Without it, no foundry can legally supply railway bogie castings for Indian Railways wagon manufacture. LCPL’s approval is current and covers the full production range.

ISO 9001:2015 certification covers documented production procedures, material traceability, formal non-conformance management, corrective action processes, and annual management review.

The Documentation Package — Standard With Every LCPL Delivery

Every delivery from LCPL’s railway foundry in West Bengal includes:

  • Heat Certificate — spectrometry-measured chemical composition for the specific production heat. Identified by heat number and pour date. Shows all elements including P, S, C, Mn, Si, and alloy additions.
  • Mechanical Test Certificate (NABL Accredited) — UTS, yield strength, elongation, Charpy impact. Compared against RDSO minimums.
  • Heat Treatment Record — furnace time-temperature log for the production batch.
  • Dimensional Inspection Report — critical dimensions measured against RDSO drawing tolerances.
  • RDSO Approval Reference — current approval document reference for the supplied component.

This five-document package is standard. Not a premium service. Not a special request. The baseline documentation for a safety-critical railway component from a certified West Bengal foundry.
